Ancient Peru has one of the richest weaving traditions in the world, garments were not only made from plant fibers such as cotton, but luxurious camelid wool that came from one of the four species (in order of wool quality and fineness) vicuna, guanacos, alpaca, or llama. As llamas and alpacas are domesticated from the wild vicuna and guanacos, they were more commonly used. Incan royalty reserved the right to wear vicuna which was worth nearly the same as gold - and today vicunas are still the most expensive wool on the market. The deceased were often wrapped in layers of cloth- the precious fabrics conveyed the wealth and power of the person. All of these textiles were likely preserved in burials.
