Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 BCE. A gorgeous and sizable gauze textile panel comprised of cotton threads in a uniform vermilion color with a fringe border around two thirds of the exterior periphery. The border consists of highly-stylized birds in hues of blue, yellow, red, and white, with folded wings and slender beaks. The birds retain tabs that connect them to the main red panel, but parts of their ground border are absent. Sewn against a modern textile panel on a fabric backing, this is perfect to frame as a vibrant display piece. Size (ancient textile): 22" L x 20.5" W (55.9 cm x 52.1 cm); (cloth backing; cloth mounting): 37" L x 36" W (94 cm x 91.4 cm)
