North America, ca. millions of years ago. This is sizable and pretty piece of tiger eye stone, that has been excavated and polished on one planar surface to show off the silky graining and parallel crystals that create the chatoyancy, or "cat eye effect." Throughout the matrix are striations of both the golden brown - a result of iron oxidation - and gray-blue formed from asbestos (crocidolite). The darker gray-blue variety of tiger eye is known as hawk's eye, which can be thought of as the parent or previous phase of tiger eye. In this matrix there are streaks, much like wood graining, of both blue and the of golden brown due to iron levels. The incidental veining and surrounding matrix look like a desert landscape with the tiger eye forming mountains and plateaus! Size: 7" L x 3" W x 2.75" H (17.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 7 cm)
