Prehistoric, Miocene to Pliocene period, ca. 28 to 3.6 million years ago. A robust polished Megalodon tooth adorned with natural growths of white barnacles on the root area of the tooth from centuries spent on the ocean floor. Boasting a beautifully smooth surface, the fossilized cuspid presents with a tan hue near its still-sharp tip and dark brown and gray hues towards where it would attach to the jaw. Several vertical striations along the upper enamel are a result of the fossilization process. Meaning "big tooth", the Megalodon was one of the most powerful predators to roam the earth, estimated to grow up to 59 feet long! Teeth are all that remain of these ancient creatures, whose skeletal structures - like those of all sharks - were made of cartilage and did not fossilize when they became extinct 3.6 million years ago. Interestingly, a megalodon's age at death can be determined by the growth rings radiating from the centra of the tooth. A fascinating artifact that grants a humbling perspective on the size and timespan of our own species! Size: 4.1875" L x 3.125" W (10.6 cm x 7.9 cm); 5.875" H (14.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Missing layer of fossilized tooth in mid-section. Chip on right side and minor nicks on left side, but form is clear. Encrustations and surface wear commensurate with age. Overall, very nice.
