Pablo Picasso (Spanish/French, 1881-1973). "Taureau sous l'arbre" (Bull Under the Tree) ceramic plate, 1952 - Reference: Alain Ramie Picasso Catalogue no. 159. Ed: 500. Marked "EDITION PICASSO" in black as well as "MADOURA PLEIN FEU" and "EDITION PICASSO" stamps on underside. A beautiful white earthenware round plate decorated in oxidized paraffin (black) and white glaze that highlights Picasso's respect for bulls, animals that he admired for their muscular forms, impressive strength and energy, as well as intelligence. Picasso boldly rendered the bull in black and added subtle green tones in areas and dots surrounding the rim to further imbue the piece with motifs that reflect the animal's vitality. Among the rare limited edition ceramics Picasso created with the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris in the South of France! Size: 8" in diameter (20.3 cm) Size (frame): 13.125" L x 13.125" W x 1.75" deep (33.3 cm x 33.3 cm x 4.4 cm)
According to Picasso scholar Vicente Marrero, "In the work of Picasso, the bull is like one of those Spanish rivers, turbulent and agitated, which lose themselves among the brambles, rocks, and reeds, only to reappear later at some other place further on, in plain sight. There are times when it appears that the bull is adumbrated even in the 'figures' of the painter, figures as profound as they are debatable and enigmatic" (Marrero, 83).
