Peter Max (American, b. Germany 1937). Untitled etching, 1990. Edition 46 of 112. Signed in crayon and numbered in pencil below the image. A beautiful etching by Peter Max, featuring the profile head of an elegant woman delineated in Max's signature expressive style. Relatively rare as Max is best known for his vibrant color juxtapositions, this black and white etching invites the viewer to focus on Max's gesture and form without the distraction of color. A special composition by Peter Max that embraces a classic theme of ethereal beauty, mounted in a custom matte and frame beneath glass. Size (Image): 10.625" L x 8.75" W (27 cm x 22.2 cm) Size (sight view): 21.625" L x 18.75" W (54.9 cm x 47.6 cm) Size (frame): 31.5" L x 28.625" W (80 cm x 72.7 cm)
Born in Berlin, Peter Max moved frequently with his family, living in more than six countries until they settled in the United States. Max studied in New York City at the Art Students League, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Art. Max was initially revered as a visionary pop artist, beloved for his "Cosmic '60s" style, and this style later evolved to Neo-Expressionism. Max employed a bold linear technique of painting using bold Fauvist colors and intriguing themes. As he evolved from Pop to Neo-Expressionism, his work became more painterly and sensuous, and today his work continues to inspire young artists. Max's unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades.
