Marlik is an ancient site of a royal cemetery near Roudbar in Gilan, north of Iran, just south of the Caspian Sea. The culture that buried their deceased at Marlik remain somewhat of a mystery for historians. No written records from these peoples have been found, and with the exception of the cemetery at Marlik not much in the way of archaeological records has survived to shed light on their history. Scholars believe that the population in the vicinity of Marlik relocated to the central Iranian plateau near Sialk and assimilated into the native population. Teppe Hasanlu is an archaeological site located in northwest Iran (province of West Azerbaijan), south of Lake Urmia. Its destruction at the close of the 9th century BCE preserved a layer of this city, leaving well preserved buildings, artifacts, as well as skeletal remains from both the victims and their foes.
