Ancient Near East, Persian, ca. 1000 BCE. A stunning cast-bronze kohl container in the form of a standing female. She stands nude atop conjoined legs with prominent pointed breasts, an exposed navel, a slender waist, with her short right arm raised and her left arm held tightly to her hip. A trio of incised bands encircle her waist, and several incised bands droop down her neck in the form of an intricate necklace and pectoral. Her sensitive visage is comprised of coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a petite nose, pursed lips, cupped ears, braided bangs wrapped around her brow, and hair drawn back into a conical bun. The top of her head forms the mouth of the vessel and contains a kohl applicator. Loops along her shoulder allow for suspension, making this a gorgeous utilitarian work of art! Size: 2.125" W x 5.5" H (5.4 cm x 14 cm).
This kohl container has a deceptively delicate appearance, perhaps because of its feminine composition. Though the bronze on the feet and the rim is somewhat delicate, the container stands well on its own and has retained its overall form since antiquity. The bronze material suggests it was a piece of value, owned by someone who wished to not only display their wealth but use it in a utilitarian function as well. This desire carried over even into the realm of the afterlife, as this piece would likely have been placed into a grace to mark the social standing and aristocratic nature of its owner both in life and provision them in death.
