Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A long hand-carved camelid bone with the central marrow area carved out to form a long trough-like groove. At one end, tilting upward and facing away from the rest of the trough, are two carved abstract zoomorphic figures: a small jaguar below a perched bird. The bird and feline are carved with incised spots and lines and the bird has two inset turquoise eyes. Jaguars held symbolic significance to Paracas people and part of the religious practice included using spatulas, such as this to extract lime from a container as part of the elaborate shamanic ritual of ingesting hallucinogenic drugs. Elaborately carved with fine details, this bone spatula is stunning in its slender shape and turquoise eyes! Size: 11.375" L x 1.75" W (28.9 cm x 4.4 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
On pottery, textiles, and in other representations, the Paracas people depicted three types of animals over and over again: felines, serpents, and birds. Their bird depictions are varied and rich, probably reflecting the many birds native to their homeland on the southern coast of Peru. Birds often accompany trophy head art, and there are "bird impersonators", human figures with bird aspects, who commonly appear on Paracas textiles, suggesting a tradition of performance where humans dressed as birds. Hallucinogenic drugs were often used by shamans to enter a spiritual state where they could become one with animal life, like birds.
