Pre-Columbian, Central America, Costa Rica, Nicoya region, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful, hand-built pottery jar of a sizable form that presents an array of polychrome motifs across its surfaces. Illustrated in hues of jet black, citrine, and red-orange atop a beige ground, the jar bears intricately painted stripes across its flared foot, horizontal bands and helical motifs along the pedestal base and lower body, undecorated panels along the main body separated with thick black bars, and a register of abstract linear, geometric, and figural decorations on the neck just beneath the gaping mouth. An interesting and visually appealing artifact from ancient Panama! Size: 7.2" Diameter x 10.6" H (18.3 cm x 26.9 cm)
