Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A wonderful pottery vessel in the form of a disembodied trophy head and adorned with orange, red, and tan pigments. Supported by a conical foot, the spherical body of the vessel forms the head and presents stylized features, such as almond-shaped eyes, a lengthy, pointed nose, and full lips held slightly open, as though mid-speech or song. A pair of elongated ears fitted with annular earspools flank the ancient visage, all surmounted by a cylindrical headdress that doubles as the neck and rim of the vessel. An applied petaloid motif additionally adorns the front of the headdress. Size: 6" Diameter x 6.6" H (15.2 cm x 16.8 cm)

Condition
Repaired from a few large pieces with restoration over break lines. Proper right ear, left eye, headdress, and part of periphery of foot restored from new material. Expected nicks and abrasions throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining pigments.
