Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A beautiful and expertly constructed pendant formed from 63.77% gold (equivalent to 15K+). The pendant features an intriguing and abstract simian deity standing within a pair of broad panel ornaments with outstretched hands and broad shoulders, stocky legs adorned with thigh bangles, and a grand necklace. The monkey face presents with furrowed brows above beady eyes, an upturned nose, spiralized ears, and thick, gaping lips filled with four fangs. Each 'winged' ornament above and below the deity exhibits a pair of abstract serpentine heads that protrude outwards with curled noses. The back of the pendant is fitted with a suspension loop as well as a diagonal pin so it can be worn instead as a brooch. Size (pendant): 1.6" W x 1.9" H (4.1 cm x 4.8 cm); (necklace): 22" L (55.9 cm); quality of gold: 63.77% (equivalent to 15K+); total weight: 21.8 grams.
Gold ornamentation like this example has been discovered in ancient Panamanian graves and in deposits within cenotes that perhaps signify ritual purpose. Elites in the Cocle culture seem to have adorned themselves in ornate, skillfully crafted gold finery created mostly from deposits of gold ore found in rivers and other shallow bodies of water.

Condition
Wearable as shown as a pendant or brooch. Gold pendant is ancient, and necklace strand as well as suspension loop and pin fittings on verso are modern. Pendant has small nicks and casting flaws on verso, otherwise intact and excellent. Wonderful lustrous patina throughout.
