Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A pair of gorgeous matching vessels that are the epitome of the distinctive Cocle style. Each has a bulging lower end with a wide, sloping shoulder and a rounded base. Above this is a long, gently flaring neck that terminates in a wide, rolled rim. Colorful motifs decorate the necks and upper bodies of both. Each vessel is decorated with highly abstracted avian or birdlike forms. Size of one: 6.6" W x 10.25" H (16.8 cm x 26 cm)
To the ancient Panamanians, these exquisitely painted motifs would have conjured a known mythic or Shamanic being. The composition of this design is comprised of these fantastical life forms in combination with geometric bands of red and black. Geometric design elements such as these were imbued with powerful symbolism, although the cognitive intent of these has largely been forgotten or is no longer known. As for the color scheme, it is a binary construct with black symbolizing the female and red symbolizing the male.

Condition
Both have been repaired and restored from multiple pieces. One is repaired at the neck and around the rim, as well as on the underside. The other has a repair on the neck. There is some overpainting of repaired/restored areas on both. Areas on both with manganese deposits visible are areas that have not been overpainted. Both have very nice original pigment in many places.
