Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A lovely pair of high-quality 89% to 94% (equivalent 21K+ to 22K+) gold earrings with floral bosses. The flowers are molded from two discs of gold sheets; one hammered and adorned with repousse petals radiating from a central circle. This repousse sheet is attached to the flat verso sheet and then both are welded to a thick wire. The lower part of the wire branches into petite protrusions from the lower edge of the flower boss, perhaps as leaves or attachments for additional ornamentation. The rest of the wire forms a hoop, the terminal tips create the original loop clasp, now permanently wrapped together. These earrings have been made wearable with modern 14K plated sterling silver ear hooks added to the hoops! Size of earrings: 1.17" L (3 cm); flower boss: 0.45" Diameter (1.1 cm); gold quality: 89% to 94% (equivalent 21K+ to 22K+); weight: 3.4 grams
