Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Xenon Ware, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A fabulous pair of pottery skyphoi, each of petite form and presenting a discoid foot and thin walls that flare outwards to form a deep basin and circular rim with twin parabola handles sitting just below. Both enveloped in a rich black glaze, their exterior bodies feature differing, orange-painted decorative programs. The larger skyphos exhibits 2 horizontal registers, the top with a spiral motif and bottom displaying right-pointing arrows. Conversely, the squatter vessel boasts a horizontal row of "S" shapes on one side and left-pointing arrows on the other, both underlined by a pair of parallel striations. Size (of largest): 4.4" in diameter x 2" H (11.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added pale orange or pink decoration over black glaze.
