- Lot Description
United States, untitled still lifes, oil on canvas, both signed "Ferriot" (perhaps Joe Ferriot?), ca. 1950s. A wonderful pair of still life paintings, one depicting a flower arrangement in a glass vase on a tabletop before a window. A blue curtain is drawn to the left so as to let in the light which Ferriot captures reflecting off the glass and highlighting the organic and inorganic forms of the composition. The other painting presents a bouquet of red, pink, and white flowers in a white porcelain vase atop a piece of lace on a table. The paintings are signed "Ferriot" which may refer to Joe Ferriot, a founder of the Whiskey Painters of America which was conceptualized in a bar in the 1950s by a small group of members of the Akron Society of Artists who actually dipped their paintbrushes in whiskey when creating watercolors. Although these still lifes, painted with oils rather than watercolors, were not likely whiskey paintings, it is fun to think that the artist of these paintings may have been a bona-fide member of the Whiskey Painters of America. Size: both measure ~ 13.875" W x 10.75" H (35.2 cm x 27.3 cm)
