East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A wonderful pair of wooden figures, possibly ancestors or Daoist dignitaries, both seated with hands together and draped in veils. The male wears several elaborate sashes and presents a coiled beard and eyebrows as he gazes downward in contemplation. Similarly, the female also features downcast eyes, while her veil is tied in a bow beneath her chin. Hollow cavities in the verso of each figure would have allowed worshippers to place offerings or prayers. Size (both similar): 9.75" L x 12.75" W x 28.25" H (24.8 cm x 32.4 cm x 71.8 cm)
Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, acquired from 1990 to 2005
