East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A charming pair of Fu Lions perched atop ribbed gourds, these figures exhibit a particularly gargoyle-esque appearance. In Chinese culture, the word for gourd ("hulu") sounds like "fulu," meaning fortune and wealth, making it a powerful symbol for attracting prosperity. The combination of the Fu Lion and the gourd represents both protection and the attainment of wealth - auspicious qualities for a home or place of business. Pairs of Fu Lions are traditionally placed at entrances to serve as guardians and symbols of good fortune. Fu Lions, also known as Guardian Lions or Shishi, often have a fierce, almost comically exaggerated appearance that can resemble an "ugly dog." With their wide, snarling mouths, bulging eyes, and curly manes, they sometimes look like a mix between a bulldog and a mythical beast. Size: 10" Diameter x 10" H (25.4 cm x 25.4 cm)
