C. Alan Johnson (American, 1926-2013) "Ahtoon" 1962. A charming pair of ceramic children entitled "Ahtoon" by Alaskan artist C. Alan (Bud) Johnson (active/lived in Alaska, 1926-2013), with hand painted details. The children are presented sitting with their feet peeking out from under the hem of their fur coats. They hold a pail on top of their heads with mitten hands. One is painted with a tan coat and white trim, and the other has a creamy white coat with brown trim. Their faces are comprised of impressed details, slightly protruding stubby noses, and rosy painted cheeks. The underside is signed in black paint with "C. Alan Johnson" and the year "1962". The "Ahtoon" figures were first made in 1958 with later renditions, such as this pair, and are highly collectible! Size: 3" L x 2.25" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm x 10.2 cm)
According to the Anchorage Daily News, "Alan was a talented sculptor and watercolorist and the designer of the much loved Alaska figurines. With his artist wife, he co-founded the C. Alan Johnson Co. in 1958. They produced artwork for 48 years, until 2006, when he retired at the age of 80 and they closed the business. He completed his last painting in 2010 which depicts the FV Thelma C, a historic Alaska salmon fishing boat." (Anchorage Daily News, March 26-April 1, 2013

Good condition! Minor fading of pigments and area of discoloration on pail of one. Felt pads added to bases for stability. Clearly signed and dated on bases of both.
