Osmeivy Ortega Pacheco (Cuban, b. 1980). Woodcut of three horses, an artist's proof, 2016. Hand signed and dated in pencil on the lower right. "P/A" (prueba del artista - artist's proof) in pencil on lower left. A large-scale woodcut depicting three horse heads peering over a fence by Cuban artist Osmeivy Ortega Pacheco. The artist executed this piece entirely by hand with a spoon in his studio in Cuba following a visit to Sweden where he felt little connection with the people but immense connection with the animals, especially the horses. Despite the fact that Pacheco has witnessed technological advances in printmaking throughout the world, he has remained true to traditional techniques. When his work was exhibited at Childs Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston's Back Bay, the "direct influence of Durer in his woodcuts" was recognized. According to the gallery, Pacheco's "textures are exquisitely rendered, and stark in their simplicity." Size of sight view: 26.875" L x 38.375" W (68.3 cm x 97.5 cm) Size of frame: 44.5" L x 55.875" W (113 cm x 141.9 cm)
This fabulous piece not only demonstrates the artist's fine technique and eye for composition, but it is also set in a custom frame that is of museum quality. Interestingly, since paper is difficult to come by in Cuba, Ortega has also been known to print on fabric. This piece, however, was printed on beautiful high-quality paper (watermarks visible at upper left and lower right corners).
Osmeivy Ortega Pacheco is one of Cuba's most exciting printmakers. Born in Havana, Pacheco balanced his collegiate studies between art and academic coursework. After completing four years of law school, Pacheco made a life changing decision. He could not deny his creative spirit and elected to abandon his pursuit of a law career in order to devote himself to his art. Pacheco graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba in 2003, and upon graduating, the school hired him as a professor where he has taught intermittently ever since. Pacheco's honors include Honorable Mention from the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico (2004) as well as a Special Mention at the 10th La Joven Estampa Prize (2009). In addition, he had an artist-in-residence fellowship at Otahuhu College in New Zealand (2017). Pacheco's work has been exhibited at the 10th and 11th Havana Biennales and extensively throughout Cuba, the Cleveland Institute of Art, the London Print Studio, Childs Gallery in Boston's Back Bay, as well as in Sweden, Panama, and Mexico.
