East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. 1868 to 1912 CE. A very large and quite ornate cloisonne jar. Cloisonne is an ancient process where a metal vessel was decorated using melted glass or enamel that was separated using thin gold, silver or copper wire. This vessel is one of the more ornate that we have seen. Deep brown base decorated with floral patterns along with dragons, birds, and komainu or shishis (foo dogs or lions), all in green, blue, white and light yellow. Interior rim is finished in an emerald green enamel base. Size: 17.5" W x 18.5" H (44.4 cm x 47 cm)
Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired between 1964 to mid-1990s
