Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico / Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1150 to 500 BCE. One of my favorites, a greenstone statue carved in the round, depicting a standing shaman figure wearing a jaguar head over the top of his or her head. In his or her hands, which rest at the waist, the figure carries two long objects - perhaps ceremonial staffs, perhaps tools for bloodletting rituals. The figure has the classic Olmec baby face with jowly cheeks, slit eyes, a relatively naturalistic nose with partially pierced nostrils, and a were-jaguar mouth. The fangs of the jaguar head hang over the top of the face, with the snout and rounded ears of the beast visible when viewed from the front. The stone, banded green and white, is particularly pretty. The back of the head is pierced through four times to create two places for suspension. Size: 1.1" W x 3.1" H (2.8 cm x 7.9 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
To the Olmecs, figurines like this example carried many meanings, not all of which are obvious to us today; however, scholars surmise that the color green was associated with vibrant growth, renewal, and, given the cyclical conception of life and death, rejuvenation after death. A breathtaking work of art in near miniature, replete with strong technique, intriguing symbolism, and an inherently beautiful green stone. A superb sculptural work from the Olmec, the early Mesoamerican civilization that most regard as the forerunner of subsequent ancient American cultures such as the Maya and Aztecs!
