Native American, North America, Southwestern New Mexico, Southeast Arizona, and Northern Chihuahua region of Mexico, Mogollon culture, ca. 1000 to 1150 CE. An intriguing, hand-built pottery olla of a spherical form with a corseted neck and flared rim, all sitting upon a round yet stable base. The exterior of the ancient vessel is intricately adorned with corrugated decoration, alternating between Reserve Plain and Indented Corrugated styles. Both modification of the coil and scrape method, these techniques require immense skill; each coil of pottery was carefully placed atop one another and in some cases indented with the potter's finger at remarkably regular, tight intervals. The rounded base suggests that this vessel was made to be set in a sandy floor. The artists responsible for creating pottery vessels like this one were usually women and many Mogollon women have been found in burials accompanied by pottery making tools. Pottery vessels similar to this one have been found in the Starkweather Ruin in New Mexico. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 7" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm)

A few minor chips to rim. Some expected nicks and abrasions, all commensurate with age. Fire-darkening to areas. Otherwise, excellent with nice remaining detail.
