Ancient Near East, The Levant, Jordan, Neolithic / Chalcolithic to Middle Bronze Age, ca. 4000 BCE. This is a pottery head of an idol figure, hand built and shaped with an elongated and conical profile. The hooked nose protrudes over an incised mouth, puffy cheeks, and rounded chin that slightly overhangs the neck. The brow tapers upward to the headdress or coiffure, and to the sides are shallow indentations as slit-form eyes. Idols of this characteristically abstract form are enigmatic pieces of the ancient past that may represent deities, venerated fertility idols, or ancestral figures. Size: 1.25" W x 3.35" H (3.2 cm x 8.5 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
