- Lot Description
Europe, Neoclassical / Victorian, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A gorgeous 17 karat gold ring with a thick circular band and an ovoid bezel. Within the bezel is a colorless glass intaglio with carefully-carved details depicting the bust of a grotesque, a popular subject in Hellenistic and Alexandrian times and on into the Roman period. The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, yet brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of ancient iconography. A beautiful and wearable ring! Size: 0.875" W x 0.875" H (2.2 cm x 2.2 cm); quality of gold: 17K; total weight: 4.7 grams; US ring size 5.
The designation of a figure as a "grotesque" does not denote a revolting or otherwise off-putting presentation but rather one of life-like accuracy. An artist would create grotesque figures to display a heightened sense of realism, sculpting and illustrating features in a lucid manner rather than stylizing the features to make them appear pleasing to the eye. Though some artists used the maladies and deformations of others to create exaggerated caricatures, others used such negatively-perceived aspects of certain individuals as a means of expressing them in a true-to-life approach.
