Europe, Italy, Neoclassical, ca. 19th century. A beautiful cameo wonderfully realized out of a multiple leveled single banded agate stone revealing different levels of color as the artist worked the surface, and framed by an exquisite 94% gold (equivalent to 22K+) setting with a suspension loop as well as a pin, so that it may be worn as either a pendant or a brooch. A profile bust of Juno, the Roman goddess of love and marriage (Greek Hera), is skillfully rendered on the cameo, and the periphery is beveled revealing the agate's contrasting caramel and white bands. Juno presents with delicate features and a wavy coiffure crowned by a diadem. How lovely! Size (pendant): 2.1" W x 3.125" H (5.3 cm x 7.9 cm); (cameo) 0.875" W x 1.1" H (2.2 cm x 2.8 cm); quality of gold: 94% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 24.2 grams.
The attention to detail is impressive. Her coiffure, for instance, rolled back to frame her face with every wavy lock meticulously delineated, a long curled tendril falling below her ear, and a generous loop of hair gracing the back of her neck - and that diadem with minute divots to denote the jewels that adorn it. The 22K+ gold setting is also Neoclassical and equally marvelous. A smooth gold band lined with granulation serves as an immediate border surrounding the cameo; however, as the eye moves outward, an incredible composition of leaf, ribbon, and pinecone motifs further embellishes the piece.

Very light encrustations on cameo periphery, otherwise intact and excellent. Warm patina across gold components and nice luster to cameo.
