Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 200 BCE to 300 CE. A remarkable tunic tightly woven from camelid fibers in hues of maroon, espresso, and marigold to display a rectangular form with a decorative San Pedro cactus cross motif. Each shorter end displays 3 rows of 5 gold-colored cacti crosses, while the middle of the cloth presents 2 stripes of solid color. A lovely fringe further embellishes the shorter peripheries of the tunic. The branches of the San Pedro cactus contain a hallucinogenic substance that was used for traditional medicine and rituals. The textiles of Peru demonstrate immense artistic and technical developments achieved by the Andean civilizations.
