Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A gorgeous matching pair of discoid ear spools made from high-grade (92-94%) silver. The front of each spool consists of an openwork applique depicting a pair of flying birds surrounded by a border of raised stippling. Each applique is applied to the top of an closed cylindrical body which could be worn and secured with the raised back rim. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 1.6" Diameter (4.1 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand; quality of silver: 92-94%; total weight: 19.2 grams.
The cosmology of the Nazca world revolved around the desert landscape of their home, and the need for rainfall in order to successfully practice agriculture. They believed that powerful creatures controlled the fecundity of the land and the presence of water: the killer whale in the sea, the feline on the land, and the condor in the sky. By wearing these highly valuable ear spools, their owner would have connected themselves to the power of their avian forms.
