Pre-Columbian, South Coast of Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE; Central Coast of Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A nice set of 2 hand-built pottery vessels from ancient Peru. First is a petite Nazca vessel covered in tan, red, black, maroon, orange, and white pigments to form the stylized visage of a trophy head. The head features large, almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose that protrudes from the side walls, and full lips, all beneath a crosshatched head wrap. The larger Chimu vessel features a flat-bottomed, apple-shaped body with a central cylindrical spout and a slender strap handle on the verso. Incised on the body are 7 rectangular panels, each containing an abstract rabbit-eared figure with lengthy arms; some of the panels are inverted and look reminiscent of an abstract mouse. Size (Nazca jar): 3.2" W x 3.125" H (8.1 cm x 7.9 cm); (Chimu jar): 4.36" Diameter x 6.2" H (11.1 cm x 15.7 cm)

Condition
Nazca vessel repaired from 2 large pieces, with light adhesive residue along break lines; Chimu vessel is intact and very good. Both vessels have minor abrasions and a few small spalls commensurate with age, with minimal fading to pigments on Nazca vessel, and light encrustations. Great preservation to trophy head motif on Nazca vessel and incised decorations on Chimu vessel.
