Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery cup adorned with a vibrantly colored depiction of the fierce "Anthropomorphic Mythical Being." The kero cup or bowl rests on a rounded but stable base, with a deep basin and wide, flared rim. The terracotta surface is slipped in a creamy white hue, then painted with the deity encircling the entire exterior. His head is whiskered, and the headdress consists of a row of spears or arrows pointing upward and his talon like hands are raised over his head. The elongated body wraps all the way around, so his feet are positioned at the tips of the arrows / his hands, and nearly every part of his body and cape are adorned with stylized trophy heads. All is slip painted in hues of maroon, tan, russet, black, gray, and brown. The "Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings" can be interpreted as underworld deities or demons; comprised of spiraling tails and leering humanoid yet feline-esque or animalistic features, this is a fascinating example! Size: 4" Diameter x 3" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
