Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished portrait kero of globular form depicting a youthful man with an intriguing air of satisfaction painted across his visage. This portrait features a slender, protruding nose, offset semicircular eyes, a pair of brow lines, and a slightly pouted smile. Smiles are contagious, and one cannot help but to smile back at this example! Burgundy red freckles dot his rounded cheeks and nose in a whimsical manner. His appearance is completed by two lightly pinched ears, a simple coiffure, and decorative headdress - painted in a crosshatch pattern with a middle register displaying an abstract linear motif in hues of ochre, burgundy, and dark brown. Its interior cavity is left undecorated and is quite spacious. Examples like this would have been used for drinking fermented chicha, a type of corn beer, and probably placed into a burial to hold offerings. Size: 5" W x 5" H (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm); 6.70" H (17 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Two hairline fissures run vertically from the rim to the vessel's midsection on both its sides. Evidence of professional repair with restoration from 3 to 4 pieces, though very well done. Minor chipping to rim. Otherwise in great condition. Painted decoration is in amazing form.
