Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel adorned with a vibrantly painted and fierce "Anthropomorphic Mythical Being / AMB." The bowl rests on a rounded but stable base, with a deep basin and wide, flared rim. The exterior shoulder and neck surface is slipped in a creamy white ground while the base and interior lip has a deep umber-brown hue. The deity encircles the body twice, painted in hues of maroon, tan, russet, black, gray, and brown. His head is humanoid with a protruding tongue and multicolored stripes, and broad headdress. His hunched body has a slender curled tail and feather like spines protruding along the spine. "Anthropomorphic Mythical Beings" can be interpreted as underworld deities or demons; often comprised of spiraling tails, trophy heads, and leering humanoid yet feline-esque or animalistic features. A wonderful and bold example! Size: 6.25" Diameter x 4.125" H (15.9 cm x 10.5 cm)
