Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca/Huari (Wari), ca. 0 to 1000 CE. The royal assembly of an elite woman, displayed as they were made to be worn. Atop her head is a crown made of tiny gold discs, each perforated to be sewn onto a textile (here sewn onto a modern textile for display). At the top is a large gold disc, decorated with a stippled repousse design of graceful birds and fish, attached to a thick, cream-colored shell disc and affixed through a central perforation by a shell bead. Flanking this on either side are mirror-image gold sheet ornaments with openwork motifs that resemble temples or other architectural features. Size of head band including ornaments: 8" W x 7" H (20.3 cm x 17.8 cm); size of earring: 4" in diameter (10.2 cm); size of nose ring: 2.6" W (6.6 cm); total length of necklace: 9.4" L (23.9 cm); diameter of single necklace bead: 1.2" D (3 cm); size of shadow case: 15.25" L x 21" W x 26.8" H (38.7 cm x 53.3 cm x 68.1 cm); All of the gold is 50-60% pure (equivalent to 12K) aside from the necklace, which is 87% copper and 11% gold.
At the nose is a beautiful crescent-shaped nose ornament with a repousse serpent motif repeated vertically along its surface. At the ears are two huge spool earrings, each made of wood with a thin, crimped copper edge held in place by woven grasses (note that this edge is missing from one of the earrings). The surface of each wooden earring is decorated with incredible bright sky blue hummingbird feathers. At the neck is a necklace made of gilded copper discs, each perforated on one side for attachment. An incredible assemblage of items that gives you an idea of the splendor of ancient royalty.
