Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 300 to 400 CE. A vibrant Andean feather mosaic panel depicting a jaguar or wild feline in bright yellow feathers against chocolate brown plumage and surrounded by a U-shaped 'frame' of vermilion orange feathers with a lower border of iridescent periwinkle and cerulean blue feathers. All is woven to a textile backing, likely made from camelid (llama or alpaca) fibers. To create this amazing item, ancient artisans folded the tips of quills over a cord and tied them in place, then tied strings of parrot feathers bound in that way to a backing cloth. Professionally cleaned, mounted to museum-grade black linen, then attached to stretcher frame. The Nazca were extremely skilled at creating textiles using bold colors and strong symbolism most famously exemplified in the famous and as of yet fully understood Nazca lines. Size: feather panel measures 12.75" L x 10.25" W (32.4 cm x 26 cm); 15.125" L x 13" W (38.4 cm x 33 cm) with backing
The ancients of the Andes held parrots in high esteem. Not only were they thought to be incarnations of sky deities for their ablity to fly well above the tree line, but they were also prized for their brilliant plumage. The actual purpose of such pieces and how they were used in ancient times is unclear. Some scholars suggest that they were intended to decorate the walls of important buildings on special occasions. Others believe that they were used as chest panels as part of an elaborate warrior or ceremonial costume, and still others believe that they were buried as offerings to the gods.
