Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca, ca. 1st to 5th century CE. A charming, hand-built pottery stirrup vessel of spherical form with a rounded base, sloped shoulders, and a pair of cylindrical spouts conjoined by a bridging handle. The painted motif is a beautiful display of rich Nazca illustrations which set their wares apart from their contemporaries. Across the exterior is a finely painted depiction of an anthropomorphic mythical being with a youthful presence accessorized in a loin cloth and a dignified headdress with leaves along its peripheries. The boy has hooves for fingers and toes with outstretched arms and hands grasped around floral vines. The motif is painted in cream, gray, and black hues repeated twice over a russet red ground. Size: 4.5" W x 6.75" H (11.4 cm x 17.1 cm)
