Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery statue depicting a seated female figure with legs folded beneath a white-and-orange striped skirt. The red-slipped woman presents a slight forward-leaning posture with globular breasts and a slender waist. Sinuous arms extend outward from rounded shoulders, the right with an open hand and a roundel-adorned armband, and the left hand grasping a small olla beneath six tight ringlets surrounding the bicep. Her feminine visage is defined by recessed almond-shaped eyes, smooth cheeks adorned with applied black striations, a prominent nose with a small nose ring, parted lips, pointed ears with four earrings each, and a smooth brow, all beneath a domed head with a central spout hole and a simple headband. The intricate detailing enlivens the figure, and her naturalistic pose imbues her with a dynamic sense of movement and oration. Size: 7.25" W x 11.5" H (18.4 cm x 29.2 cm).
