Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A remarkable hand-built and highly burnished redware pottery female figure depicted with a bulbous body and arched back as she rests both hands on her knees which are folded before her. Her sizeable, almond-shaped head displays a stylized countenance, comprised of slanted eyes, a pointed nose, and full, closed lips, all flanked by a pair of bow-like ears. Adorned in red, beige, and black pigments, the ancient figure wears a helmet-like headdress with a lattice motif decoration, a rectangular chest piece, and a slender belt.
