Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A remarkable hand-carved marble head of a Roman youth in high relief featuring a naturalistic face framed by wavy tresses of a thick coiffure. Epitomizing the beau ideal, the ancient visage exhibits a pair of huge, almond-shaped eyes with generous lids beneath a heavy, straight brow, a prominent nasal bridge leading to a broad nose, full cheeks, and a petite pair of bowed lips. This gorgeous example may be a funerary portrait or represent a god, such as Apollo, the youthful god of music, the sun, light, poetry, prophecy, healing and more. Size: 10.25" L x 6" W x 11" H (26 cm x 15.2 cm x 27.9 cm); 14.25" H (36.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The realistic proportions of this face suggest that this sculptor revered mathematically based proportions in his figures, much like the revered Greek sculptor Polykleitos who purportedly said, "Perfection comes about little by little through many numbers." Notice the attention to even the smallest details, i.e., the precise delineation of those eyes, each lock of hair, and the pursed lips.
