- Lot Description
Native American, Western United States, California / Oregon, Modoc County, Plateau culture, Post-Archaic period, ca. 500 BCE to 1500 CE. A fascinating pair of stone and obsidian Native American artifacts that were discovered together in a cave near the California Oregon border. One is a large pendant pecked from a river cobble with a drilled hole for suspension and remains of organic basketry material on the surface. The other is a mahogany obsidian bi-pointed blade with the same woven remains and mineral deposits. These were found in 1936 in cave near Goose Lake, that region, today known as Goose Lake Valley, has been inhabited for thousands of years by Plateau tribes such as the Pit River, Modoc, and Klamath people. Size of pendant: 6" L x 2" W (15.2 cm x 5.1 cm); case: 8" L x 6" W (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm)
