Nano Lopez (Colombian, b. 1955). "Alberta" bronze, 2009. Edition 30 of 260. Signed, numbered, and dated on Alberta's rear end. A limited edition bronze sculpture titled "Alberta" by Nano Lopez, featuring the adorable sheep "Alberta" kissing her fish friend "Scales". A myriad of objects adorn Alberta's woolly coat - a cup and saucer, petite birds (one perched atop a pitcher on Alberta's back), a variety of fish, a salamander, Route 66 signs, leaves, gears, balls of yarn, even the miniature head of a bighorn sheep and more - while additional embellishments, including a little frog, adorn the lily pad between Alberta and Scales. All is created via a unique process that combines both traditional and innovative techniques. Beginning with a sketch followed by a clay model, Lopez then cast "Alberta" via the traditional lost wax process which originated in ancient Greece and Rome. In the artist's words, "The transformation from clay to bronze has always been magical to me." Once the bronze was cast, Lopez added countless details via metal chasing, applied patinas to imbue the work with vibrant colors, and finally applied several coats of UV protective lacquer to both enhance and preserve the patina. One of Lopez's most endearing designs, replete with impressive artistry and technique. Size: 23" L x 10" W x 16" H (58.4 cm x 25.4 cm x 40.6 cm)
As always, Lopez has created a sculpture that is not only a work of fine art but also tons of fun! The following is Lopez's playful narrative for this , "Alberta loves long, long walks. In fact she just returned from a walk that took her all the way to Cadiz, Spain. She has a fish friend called 'Scales' which has a crush on her, and lately on her weekly visit to the pond, Scales jumps out and gives her a kiss, and to this day Alberta doesn't yet know quite what to make of it."
More about Nano Lopez's process: "For Nano, the entire sculpting process begins with his initial conceptual sketches. He then creates a small working model in clay. Following that, he will then sculpt the piece actual size. In his artistic process, Nano integrates organic textures and human-made objects into his bronzes to create pieces of art that reflect the same depth and richness he sees in the world around him. The sculptures unique elements become part of the final piece in several ways. They may be embedded, applied to the surface, or even indented in the actual clay." (source: artist's website)
Please note: "Alberta" is one of Nano Lopez's sold out designs. What's more, this "Alberta" bronze is of the coveted "large" size. Lopez creates his "Nanimals" in four sizes: micro, small, medium, and large. The large scale sculptures usually list for over $18,000 and rarely come up for auction!
