Northern Europe, England, London, ca. 1682 CE. A remarkable and sizeable codex entitled "An Impartial Collection of the Great Affairs of State, from the beginning of the Scotch Rebellion in the year 1639 to the murther [sic] of King Charles I Wherein the first Occasions, and the whole Series of the late Troubles in England, Scotland, and Ireland, are faithfully Represented," written by John Nalson, LL.D and published by His Majesties Special Command. The first volume in a set of 2, the intriguing book was printed for S. Mearne, T. Dring, B. Tooke, T. Sawbridge, and C. Mearne in London in 1682. Comprised of over 817 pages, the book is written in Early Modern English and printed in black ink. A gorgeous print by the engraver Robert White (1645 to 1703) decorates the frontispiece, depicting an allegorical image of a female Britannia praying beside the fallen arms of Great Britain and discarded crowns, hats, and scepters of kings and bishops as a clergyman attempts to grab her attention. Size: 8.5" L x 2.375" W x 13.25" H (21.6 cm x 6 cm x 33.7 cm)
Fit with a leather cover, this codex is considered Nalson's most important work and was intended to serve as an antidote to a similar book by John Rushworth as a special patronage by King Charles II. The text is entirely written in black ink Early Modern English. Several watermarks can be found throughout the book, most notably a jester, a coat of arms, and a geometric motif.
