Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Remarkable and remarkably rare Roman bronze in the form of a Sea Goat. This creature is represented as the astrological Zodiac sign of Capricorn - dated in the modern calendar as December 22 to January 19. Wonderfully detailed, molded from bronze - a mixture of copper, tin and lead - with front section of a goat with curled horns over the back of his head and cloven hooves and luxurious waves of mohair covering chest and legs. Back section is depicted as a fish with curled tail, broad tail fin and covered in rows of scales. This sculpture was used as the foot on a vessel and probably came as a set of three, the other 2 lost to time or in other collections. Size: 3.25" L x 2.125" H (8.3 cm x 5.4 cm)
Item tested using XRF technology. Results show the entire object are ancient bronze.
