Northwestern Africa, Algeria, Tindouf, (11273), ca. 2017 CE. This rock is out of this world, literally, of a piece of the moon, lunar feldspathic breccia! When meteorites strike the moon, fragments blasted off the surface will sometimes fall to earth, known as lunar meteorites! This slice is a fragment from a larger rock that scattered into pieces upon impact. This rock has a gray and white mottled surface that looks like the gray dusty, landscape of that otherworld. One face has been polished to show off the colorations. It was not until 1982, when a scientist compared a meteorite that seemed unusual in its composition to rocks brough back from the moon by Apollo mission, that the link was established that these earth finds had indeed originated on the moon! This lunar breccia is scientifically important and provides a sample from areas of the moon yet untraveled. Size of stone: 2.3" L x 1" W (5.8 cm x 2.5 cm); case: 3.25" L x 4.25" W (8.3 cm x 10.8 cm); weight: 13.25 grams
