An impressive, hollow-built pottery figure of a seated male, his legs crossed in a dignified pose. His right hand rests on his hip, while his left gently touches his long, striated beard. A grand headdress, crowned with the emerging head of Chaac, sits atop his expressive face, complemented by large ear spools, chest roundels, and wide flares extending from either side of his head. Likely depicting a Veracruz lord, this masterful sculpture may have been interred as a funerary offering. Standing nearly life-size, this exceptional piece reaches 35.5” tall when seated and would have stood over 5 feet high in its full form. A truly remarkable work of ancient artistry. Size: 22" W x 35.5" H (55.9 cm x 90.2 cm)
Excavations near the modern Mexican town of Remojadas have revealed two types of impressive, detailed pottery figures from the Veracruz period: the Sonrientes, the joyous "smiling faces," and figures like this one, more serious, mostly adult figures, sometimes with elaborate costumes, themes, and props that all seem to point towards religious or political ceremonies. These figures are often found with the bodies broken into pieces though with the heads largely intact, as they were ritually destroyed as burial offerings. Their clothing suggests that they depict people of import in society, perhaps priests or nobility.
Provenance: private JB collection Central, California acquired in Santa Fe, New Mexico before 2004; offered at Siegal Gallery from 2004 to 2010.

#192098
As with most, if not all, monumental Veracruz figures, this has been repaired from numerous pieces with repairs over the breaks. No less than 90% original material. Visible cracks on some areas including neck, fingers and one foot, plus missing one finger. Would benefit from a professional restoration.
All shipping is handled in-house for your convenience. Your invoice from Artemis Gallery will include shipping calculation instructions. If in doubt, please inquire BEFORE bidding for estimated shipping costs for individual items.
