**First Time At Auction**
Italy, Etruscan culture, ca. 768 to 264 BCE. Wow! A truly remarkable brazier of impressive scale formed from thick impasto and showcasing ornate relief decoration celebrating the joys of the hunt! Twin relief rings encircle the wide-spanning rim, each formed from the same stamp and displaying 2 nude hunters: one spearing a boar with a lion at his back while the other is kneeling and facing a billy-goat that is surrounded by a panther and an additional lion. The scene is framed by thin lines in the metope style that were part of the main cylinder. Concentric circles adorn the shallow basin of the brazier - a unique aspect of this example - which is supported by 2 broad feet that form a central channel for drawing oxygen to the fire. Just imagine how the flickering flames would bring this action-packed imagery to life, beasts and hunters appearing to chase one another around the circumference of the brazier. A stunning cyclical representation of the circle of life! Size: 17.7" Diameter x 5.4" H (45 cm x 13.7 cm)
The cylinder seal that stamped this vessel has been identified as "The Billy-Goat Boar Hunt" sequence C2a by Lisa Pieraccini in "Around the Hearth: Caeretan Cylinder-Stamped Braziers" (Italy: L'Erma di Bretschneider, 2003, page 88). The author includes a list of 2 other braziers that bear the same stamp: one found at the Louvre (D 336 ; Cp 2446 ; S 985) and another in Copenhagen.
This vessel is part of the tradition known as Caeretan Red Ware, which lasted roughly a century in southern Etruria and produced large braziers like this one as well as large storage urns. Caeretan ware was formed from a roughly finished, grainy clay known as impasto. These pieces were thrown on a wheel and assembled in several parts, as seen in this example at the joints of the basin, walls, and feet. They were then coated with a smoother layer of clay which gained a brownish red hue in the kiln, as shown here. Braziers like these have been found in chamber tombs, domestic settings, and temples, and were designed to be portable. One of the most famous examples comes from The Tomba Maroi III, and is now on view at the Museo di Villa Giulia, Rome, which was found with the burned remains of several eggs and three drinking cups.
Caeretan braziers often depicted reliefs of animal processions or hare or boar hunts, as seen in this example. Braziers featuring friezes of the boar hunt are generally dated earlier than hare hunt scenes. Amongst the hunting scenes a small number have elements that identify them as mythological. The Calydonian Boar hunt was the earliest known Greek myth identified on cylinder seals. One of the great heroic adventures of Greek legend, the Calydonian Boar hunt occurred a generation before the Trojan War and involves a hunt to kill a boar who had been sent by Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, to ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia since its king Oeneus had failed to honor her in his rites to the gods. The hunters, led by the hero Meleager, included many of the foremost heroes of Greece. In most accounts it is also concluded that a great heroine, Atalanta, won its hide by first wounding it with an arrow. This outraged many of the men, leading to a tragic dispute.
