Solomon Islands, late 19th to early 20th century. A very tall, hand-carved wooden post, delineated with figures on both sides - a zoomorph with floppy ears, a prominent snout, a toothy grin, and male genitalia who holds what looks like the tail end of a fish in both claws standing upon the lower integral pedestal which is incised with a bird at the upper end on one side - a standing anthropomorphic figure who looks out with a serious visage comprised of deep-set eyes, a prominent nose, sharp jawline, and wears a horned headdress and round ear ornaments, on the other side. Both figures stand beneath a grand lunar crescent. Size: 12" W at widest point x 84" H (30.5 cm x 213.4 cm)
See another house post from the Solomon Islands in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (accession number 1986.486). The curatorial description includes this contextual information, "Many peoples in the eastern Solomon Islands construct elaborate feast houses and canoe houses supported by carved wood posts. The imagery of the posts frequently, as here, incorporates anthropomorphic figures depicting supernatural beings or individuals associated with specific historical events."
