Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessel in the form of a seated figure, perhaps a noble or dignitary. The red-brown figure sits upon a stable base with both legs pulled in beneath the lower fringe of a minimalist tunic and holds both arms atop a gently rounded abdomen. Rounded shoulders taper upwards to form the cylindrical head which bears tab-shaped ears, bulging ovoid eyes, a perky nose, and a slit-form mouth, all beneath a tall hat that doubles as the vessel's rim. Size: 4.7" W x 7.25" H (11.9 cm x 18.4 cm)
Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
