Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche culture, ca. 300 to 500 CE. An incredible mold-formed pottery vessel depicting an enlarged countenance of Ai Apec (also AI Apaec), the primary Moche deity of creation, food, water, and victory. Ai Apec's fanged face is presented in red-orange pigment and bears furrowed brows and bead-adorned earspools while gazing upwards with almond-shaped eyes. Beneath the creator god's face is a red-faced figure standing atop attenuated legs and holding back masses of abstract birds, snakes, and felines with extended arms. Two figures to the left feature a face riddled with leishmaniasis and another with an enraged visage, and along the back and bottom are a large, disembodied face as well as an individual with a flayed skull. Remains of red, yellow, and white pigment accentuate several areas of this rare Moche vessel. Size: 8.2" W x 14.8" H (20.8 cm x 37.6 cm)
The figure beneath Ai Apec is perhaps representative of a young lord who, under the watchful and fierce protection of Ai Apec, is able to traverse through the unknown without hesitation. The enlarged head of Ai Apec presides behind the smaller figure as a means of signifying his great importance to the Mochica people as well as his vigilance in protecting as well as leading the young royal. Malevolent forces like dangerous animals, disease, famine, war, and death are all mitigated under the Fanged God's keen eyes and unrelenting ferocity.
