Pre-Columbian, north coast of Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A marvelous pottery stirrup vessel displaying the form of a seated shaman in the process of transforming into a bird. Adorned in hues of light orange and pale yellow, the fascinating figure is shown seated and wearing a tunic, a skirt, a jaguar headdress, and a pair of annular earspools, as he holds a jaguar cub in his lap. He gazes forward from huge, almond-shaped eyes above a projecting beak. A small bag hangs on his back, likely for carrying coca or another psychoactive substance. Size: 7" W x 9.125" H (17.8 cm x 23.2 cm)
