Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Loma Negra, North Coast Peru, Early Moche, ca. 100 BCE to 300 CE. A superb portrait pendant depicting the visage of a commanding Lord King and comprised of gilded copper that has been skillfully hammered in repousse and inlaid with white shell, lapis lazuli eyes, and turquoise ear ornaments – the visage is further adorned with a banded headdress that possesses a slit on each side once used for suspension or attachment. The face also presents a prominent high relief nose and pursed lips. Static and somewhat expressionless, he appears as if in an entranced state.
